FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON FEE-ONLY WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Plain answers to the things most prospects want to know — what fee-only really means, how the costs compare, what a first conversation looks like, and what happens next.
Some clients arrive with a single question, a tax decision, an equity event, a retirement timeline. Others arrive with several. Either way, the next step is the same: a relaxed first call to find out what is most pressing and whether we are the right fit to help with it.
They sound nearly identical and they are not. A ‘fee-only’ firm is paid exclusively by clients. A ‘fee-based’ firm is paid both by clients and by the companies whose products they sell, which reintroduces the exact conflicts the fee-only structure exists to eliminate. The terminology was designed to be confusing. The structure underneath is not.
A fiduciary has a legal and ethical obligation to place the client’s interests ahead of their own. Most brokers and bank advisors operate under a lower standard called the suitability standard, which only requires that a recommendation be “appropriate,”even if a more expensive product would also qualify. Fiduciary is a high bar. Suitability is a low one. The difference between the two, compounded across decades and across the choices a single advisor makes for a single client, is significant.
The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is widely considered the gold standard in investment management. Earning it requires more than a thousand hours of study, three six-hour exams, four years of qualifying professional experience, and an annual reaffirmation of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Less than five percent of financial advisors hold it.
We typically work with clients who have half a million dollars in investable assets and up. The minimum is structural rather than philosophical, at lower asset levels, an integrated advisory relationship is rarely the right fit for what the client actually needs. If your situation is below that threshold but unusually complex, a one-time planning engagement may be the better answer, and we are happy to talk it through.
When new clients move to Rossi Financial Group, their total cost of investing typically falls by 50 to 80 percent compared to what they were paying before. Most of that savings comes from removing third-party payments and replacing higher-cost retail products with lower-cost institutional-grade alternatives. The rest is structural, we have no sales platform to subsidize, so there is nothing to mark up.
The first conversation is a phone call, on your schedule, lasting about thirty minutes. We listen for what’s prompting you to reach out, what you are trying to figure out, and where you’d like to be in the future. There is no pitch. If we are the right fit, we will suggest a discovery meeting in our office or by video. If we are not, we will tell you that and point you somewhere useful.
The honest answer is that the best time to react to a downturn is well before it arrives. We use sophisticated stress-testing tools to evaluate how a portfolio is likely to behave across different market environments, and we build allocations that can withstand the inevitable shocks without forcing painful decisions at the worst possible moment. Risk management is not a bolt-on; it is the structural foundation of how a portfolio is built in the first place.
Yes. Whatever you pay us appears on a single line, in plain English, in writing. There are no hidden fees, no third-party payments, no rebates from product sponsors, and no incentive payments of any kind. If you ever cannot easily explain how your advisor is paid in one sentence, you are likely paying more than you think, and you should ask.
Whichever channel feels easiest, schedule a call from any page on this site, send an email, or pick up the phone. The first conversation is short, relaxed, and free, and the process from there moves at whatever pace suits you. We are not in a hurry, and we do not expect you to be.
If something specific to your situation is not answered here, the fastest path is usually to ask it directly. A relaxed first call is the simplest way, typically thirty minutes, on your time, with no pitch and no obligation. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit, and if we are not, we will point you somewhere that is.
